Our history
The Hostel -Casa da Tia Amália, was born out of a family home, in fact, an Inn.
We are a family owned and operated business.
According to the elders, it was the Estalagem da Dona Joana, a distinguished lady from Vila de Mértola. Why I don't know, one day, Senhor José da Encarnação, José do Rio, master of the "Gasolina", a vessel that transported people and goods between Vila Real de Sto. António to Mértola and my great-grandfather, bought the Inn.

Here, my family's story begins in this house.

Senhor José do Rio and Senhora Amália had four heirs, Maria Emília, Amália, Antónia and Manelito.

Tragically, this enterprising man, dies in his early 30s, but leaves this Inn as an inheritance today.

His wife, a businessman, a working woman, does not let what her husband started die, quite the contrary. If it was a mandatory stop for travelers, for people on the left bank of the Guadiana who came on their horses to Vila, it continued to be so.

Yes, the men passed by and the animals were kept and treated at the inn, which still exists, and which will be our next intervention. Everyone who came and went passed the ferry, also did their shopping at Loja da Dona Amália, today, "A Casa Amarela".

Due to the mother's death, this Inn passed to Aunt Amália. Aunt with whom I have very rich and homesick memories, she and Aunt Antonica, taught me to embroider, bake, make dumplings and rag dolls, in short, the best memories and a child can keep.
Today, with my family, Manelito's granddaughter, Manuel Eugénio, who everyone knew in Mértola, and who would be radiant with all this, I will keep the tradition and offer you the best accommodation in a contemporary style, in the guest house - Casa of Aunt Amália.
